Rachel Johanson, writer, citizen journalist, artist and truth-seeker

Hi, I’m Rachel Johanson, an independent journalist and artist from The Villiage.

My writing spans a wide array of subjects, including personal observations, politics, skeptical thinking, crime, law, corruption, energy, science and more. I’ve always believed that truth is the most important thing in life, and I’m committed to pursuing it, no matter where it leads.

As an atheist, I approach the world with a critical eye, free from the influence of superstition or the supernatural. My curiosity and commitment to evidence-based reporting drive everything I do. Writing is more than just a profession for me; it’s a necessity.

I live, so I write.

Beyond journalism, I’m a 50-something artist who finds joy in working with paint and clay. Art has always been a way for me to express what words sometimes cannot. It’s a personal and fulfilling counterbalance to my investigative work.

I was born in Tehran, Iran, and moved to America with my parents when I was a child.

In America, I married and became a widow in less than a year.

Though I’ve lived in Greenwich Village, New York, for many years now, my grandmother helps keep my connection to my roots alive. She frequently sends me traditional Iranian foods, clothing, and gifts from back home, and I cherish these reminders of where I come from.

Before becoming a journalist, I worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and studied at the New York Academy of Art. My time there deepened my appreciation for history, culture, and storytelling, all of which inform my work today.

Will work for shoes.

At home, I share my life with my best friend, a Russian Blue named Dandoon. She’s my constant companion, listening to podcasts with me and always next to me, whether I’m writing or creating art. Me with my chai tea, Dandoon with her goat’s milk.

Thanks for visiting with me. I hope you enjoy my stories.
